Historical Commission Backs Wawinet Path Design, 6-0
Other Committee · Meeting of September 11, 2026
Nantucket Historical Commission backs grass-buffer design for Wawinet Road bike path, 6-0. Presenter Mike Burns told the panel the eight-foot path with a four-foot grass buffer, "Alternative 1C," was the only version of the project the Wawinet Landowners Association would support after opposing the plan outright. Member Barbara Halstead said she was "very glad to see Alternative C with the grass median and not the rumble strips or the guardrail." The commission also reviewed Section 106 filings for 13 proposed wireless co-locations on utility poles, some rising from under 24 feet to nearly 42 feet with antennas, and directed staff to push for minimized heights and gray-matched paint.
Staff planner Holly Maccas said the town is notified of the filings because Nantucket is a Certified Local Government. A separate update covered outreach to the Coffin family ahead of a Sept. 29 meeting on redesigning the Milestone Rotary, home to a memorial stone and tree.
