Nantucket Harbor Board Moves to Advance Oyster Farm Expansion

Nantucket's Harbor and Shellfish Advisory Board pushes an oyster farmer's expansion request toward town officials while a fuel-access letter stalls. Farmer Sean Fitzgibbon told the board he has "already ran out" of oysters to sell this summer and asked for help securing shallow-water or intertidal growing space near Wyer's Point, but faces resistance from the Trustees of Reservations and Nantucket Conservation Foundation, both bordering landowners. Board member Kevin Corn argued the request "falls right in" the board's advisory mission; member Scott said he was "tired of churning wheels" after a year and a half of delay.

The board agreed to get Natural Resources Coordinator Jeff Carlson and staff member Tara to survey the site in late August. Separately, members said a letter recommending Chapter 91 license enforcement against Great Harbor Yacht Club remains "in limbo" at the Select Board, even as new vendor Sun Island Fuel says the club won't return its calls. Natural Resources staff also reported roughly 130 million bay scallop larvae released this season and the hatchery's first successful ribbed mussel spawn.

The board voted 5-0 to move its August meeting to August 18.
