Board votes to expand soft-shell clam season

Other Committee · Meeting of September 15, 2026

Nantucket's Harbor and Shellfish Advisory Board voted unanimously to add Saturdays to soft-shell clamming season. The vote, moved by board member DeCosta and seconded by Corn, folds into a larger shellfish-regulation package also cutting green crabs from the code and extending license-renewal deadlines, headed for a Select Board public hearing. Board member Carlson gave no resolution on a monthslong Chapter 91 dispute with Great Harbor Yacht Club, whose attorney Steve Cohen has told the town it is not violating its state waterways license despite language members say requires a "fueling station" and emergency haul-out capacity.

One member called the club's position "highly confused," and another said the club "lied to us through day one" about promised fuel access. Members put the commercial dockside fuel gap at $1.60 to $4 a gallon. The town's mid-August inquiry to the state Department of Environmental Protection has drawn only an acknowledgment of receipt.
