Nantucket panel reviews $2 million Pleasant Street sidewalk options

Nantucket Historical Commission weighs tree removal against accessibility on $2 million Pleasant Street redesign. Mike Burns, managing the project for the town, presented five design alternatives developed by consultant Apex for three trouble spots between Five Corners and Main Street, where narrow sidewalks and on-street parking conflict with mature shade trees. Commissioner Angus said he wants to preserve trees in most areas but backed removing one whose roots have pushed into the roadway; Commissioner Sarah McClain said "however we can save them, I think we should." A public survey on the options closes at the end of March, with a recommendation headed to the Select Board after the commission revisits the project in April.

Separately, the panel heard that the Milestone Road Rotary redesign is at 25 percent design and will trigger a state historic review, and finalized a $20,000-to-$50,000 grant match for a preservation plan. Minutes were approved 6-0.
