Nantucket Land Bank Backs Water Mitigation Deal Covering Town's Needs Through 2033

NANTUCKET — April 14, 2026 — Nantucket Land Bank Commission clears water mitigation deal and approves several property actions at busy spring meeting. The commission voted unanimously Monday to allow the Nantucket Water Department to use a Land Bank-owned 29.7-acre Milestone Road parcel as mitigation credit with MassDEP, enabling an amended water withdrawal permit to cover the town's projected needs through 2033; MassDEP representative Beth, joining by phone, said the land qualifies as priority conservation land under the Water Management Act. The board also approved a liquor license category change for Sconset Golf — conditioned on canned hard-seltzer products only — at the request of manager Sean Overly; endorsed a roughly $35,000 phased pocket park improvement at 106 Main Street with cedar fencing and extended brick paths; and approved a 40-person catered beach event at 40th Pole on August 15 for boating club Barton and Gray, organized through caterer PBX Events, with a commission member cautioning that approval "is not a guarantee" for future requests. Two design change orders totaling $227,000 from architect-engineer firm SMRT for the Jefferson Avenue historic building relocation project were reviewed, with physical moves of the structures scheduled for the weeks of May 12 and May 19.
