Nantucket board weighs referring yacht club fuel permit to Select Board

Nantucket's Harbor and Shellfish Advisory Board presses Great Harbor Yacht Club over stalled fuel dock service. Board member Dave Franzuto said the club's Chapter 91 permit requires it to provide fuel regardless of haulers' insurance concerns, warning the board could ask the Select Board to challenge the club's town permits if the impasse isn't resolved before Franzuto follows up with Sun Island and Harbor Fuel within two weeks. Roughly 15 charter and commercial boats would use a fueling station, members estimated; a 55-gallon spill kit runs about $435.

Separately, the board recapped the Select Board's unanimous vote raising the commercial scallop bushel limit from five to six, with room to reach seven, after a hard freeze kept most boats docked, two fishermen still hauled in 10 boxes this week. The board also opened talks on moving no-wake buoys near Coatue Point, which board member Franzuto said would require a town meeting vote to change the wharves and waterways bylaw. "It doesn't relieve Great Harbor Yacht Club from having to provide a fueling station," Franzuto said.
