Historical Commission reviews Tom Nevers path design, presses on monument repairs
Other Committee · Meeting of January 16, 2026
Nantucket Historical Commission reviews 2.1-mile Tom Nevers bike path design, pushes for insurance fix on monument. Consultants from Weston & Sampson, including Antoine Almeida and Devin Herrick, presented plans for a 10-foot path, 12 feet at a boardwalk section, connecting Milestone Road to Tom Nevers Field, with bidding expected spring 2026 and completion targeted for summer 2027. Herrick said "currently, in the plan, we're not showing crosswalks across Tom Nevers," prompting commissioners to request added crossings near side streets.
Separately, preservation planner Holly Backus told the commission she still lacks a clear insurance contact after a Civil War monument repair fell short of expectations, and commissioner Abby D. Molina urged her to bring the town manager "our recommended solution" rather than just a complaint. Commissioners voted 6-0 to approve December 19 and December 21 meeting minutes.
