Finance Committee · Meeting of June 9, 2026

Nantucket's Visitor Services Advisory Committee heard that May visitor traffic hit 248,900, up 14.8 percent year over year, as it previewed a packed summer calendar at its June 9 Zoom meeting. Director Shanta reported 76,600 unique visitors in May with top origin markets in Boston, Wellesley, New York, and Palm Beach, and outlined a Juneteenth block party on York Street June 20 featuring Dr. Noelle Trent of the Museum of African American History and a Fourth of July extravaganza marking America's 250th anniversary with a student-led parade, food trucks, and fireworks at Jetty's Beach.

Sergeant John Rocket of the Nantucket Police Department briefed the committee on the rollout of 40 community service officers, half of them returning, describing their mission as "a parking control function," not a quota system, while flagging that the closed valet lot will intensify downtown pressure. Rocket also introduced Officer Rachel Lester as the first dedicated downtown resource officer since Jerry Mack's retirement. The committee, which will recess for July and August, also debated the breakdown in the town's stranded-passenger lodging protocol after a Delta flight crew and Memorial Day passengers were left without clear guidance despite an existing availability list maintained by visitor services.
