Finance panel votes 8-0 to raise airport fuel cap

Finance Committee · Meeting of September 29, 2026

Nantucket Finance Committee unanimously raises airport fuel fund cap to $13 million. Airport staff told the committee jet fuel prices climbed from $4.46 to $5.85 per gallon and Avgas rose 42 percent to $7.04 per gallon, pushing year-to-date fuel spending to $8.3 million against an $8.5 million limit set in January. The 8-0 roll call vote lifts the ceiling for fiscal 2027, with a roughly $544,000 buffer built in.

Vice Chair Joanna Roche, presiding, explained the fund operates under a special state act allowing the airport to exceed its cap by up to $1.3 million without further approval. Member Peter Schaeffer called the dispute over the fund's structure "one of those municipal accounting quirks that doesn't exist in the corporate world." The committee also previewed 2027 warrant articles with Planning and Land Use Services Director Leslie Snell, who said housing bylaw work remains "bits and pieces."
