Finance Committee delays vote on planning commission overhaul

Finance Committee · Meeting of January 22, 2026

Nantucket Finance Committee hears dueling warrant-article pitches, takes no votes on planning overhaul or wind fund. Citizen petitioner Hillary Hedges-Rayport presented a new 11-member compromise to merge her long-running Nantucket Planning and Economic Development Commission restructuring petition with a rival NPEDC-backed article, but the commission has not yet reviewed it. Select Board Chair Dawn urged the committee to back a single unified article, saying "having these competing proposals at town meeting is very challenging for the voters." Separately, Val Oliver and Amy DeSibio of ACT for Wales pushed for an offshore wind stabilization fund, citing the Select Board's unmet $10 million escrow request to Vineyard Wind after 2024's blade failure.

Realtor Cliff Carroll read court testimony warning that Nantucket's 10 blade-less turbines risk fire and lightning strikes. The committee will take no motions on either article before February 3.
